Daily Destination | Northport, Maine with Michelle Turner

Monday September 20th

Abby & Colby

Abby and Colby first met when they were both working on the set of the show Gossip Girl. Maine-based photographer Michelle Turner took pictures of their rustic engagement session. Everyone had such a great experience that Michelle couldn’t wait to work with Abby and Colby again at their wedding.

The wedding was held at Point Lookout Resort and Conference Center in Northport, Maine. This venue has 387 acres of land and overlooks the Penobscot Bay. The couple chose to be wed outside on the lush property. Christina Tonkin of Christina Tonkin Interior and Events designed the layout outside, decorating the aisle with white chairs and pink and white roses with fresh green florals. Abby’s bouquet, designed by S. Scollay Custom Floral Designs, was made of white roses and yellow calla lilies. She wore a long white gown with pearl accessories, and Colby wore a gray suit with a yellow calla lilly boutonnière.

Inside, the reception space was accented with soft pink, green and yellow florals. 3 Dogs Cafe made the couple’s cake, which had sugar flowers on the top in the same color pallete. “Everyone was fabulous to work with—the wedding party was fun and stayed on the dance floor all night, and the families were wonderful,” said Michele.

PDN’s Top Knots 2010 Finalists

Friday May 21st

Yesterday we gave kudos to two of our photographers who won First Place in PDN‘s Top Knots competition. Today, we’ll be sharing which of our photographers were finalists! This is a long post (we’re lucky to have lots of talented photographers on our site), so you’re sure to get your wedding photography fix this morning.

Getting Ready Category

New York wedding photographer Susan Stripling submitted this stunning image.

Washington DC wedding photographer Greg Gibson was a finalist, thanks to this black and white showstopper.

Wedding photography couple extraordinaire and Los Angeles-based Cake and Pictures photographers Erin Hearts Court had two images published.

Ceremonies Category

Nashville wedding photographer Tara Kneiser was a finalist with this photo appropriately named “Unwilling Ring Bearer.” Too cute.

Portraits Category

Film shooter and Salt Lake City wedding photographer Jonathan Canlas submitted the image below, “Untitled.” This dog makes a tux look good.

First Place winner Lisa Lefkowitz was also a finalist in the Portraits category.

Details & Interiors Category

Erin Hearts Court scored two more published images in one of my favorite categories, Details & Interiors.

Candids Category

Los Angeles wedding photographer Max Wanger was a finalist in the Candids category. I laugh out loud every time I see this photo. If you like giraffes and v-neck t-shirts (like I do), buy the special edition t-shirt based on this image at Max’s online store. Max – if you’re reading this, your t-shirts are super, super cool.

Quite the likeness, no?

Receptions Category

Last but not least, New York wedding photographer Emin Kuliyev rounded out the competition with a photo in the Receptions category, “A New York Wedding.”

Congratulations again to the all of the winners and finalists! Head over to PDN’s online gallery to see the full list of winners.

PDN’s Top Knots 2010 Winners

Thursday May 20th

Although the winners were announced last month, we wanted to give a special shout out to some of our very talented photographers who earned top honors in Photo District News’ annual Top Knots competition!

A special congratulations to San Francisco wedding photographer Lisa Lefkowitz who won First Place in the Getting Ready category! Her winning photo, below, is entitled “Suzanne Dresses.” Lisa used available light to capture the image on film, which was processed and scanned with no retouching. According to PDN, Lisa had her assistant open the drapes to allow more light into the room and then quickly tidy the area she wanted to shoot in which was crowded with bridesmaids, hair and makeup artists, and clothing! It sure paid off.

A second, well-deserved congratulations belongs to one of our wedding photographers located in Iceland, Bragi Josefsson, who earned First Place in the Ceremonies category with these three photos. Bragi used daylight as the only light source and basic exposure/contrast/color correction by a Lightroom preset he made himself in post-production. He told PDN that the greatest technical challenge was the shot inside the church (third image below), due to the lack of natural light. Bragi worked with the light he had, and this series of images turned out remarkably beautiful.

Kudos, Lisa & Bragi! Check back tomorrow morning to see which of our other photographers were finalists this year.
